"I took Spanish for three years 40 years ago and haven’t used it since then!” “I learned Spanish during my year in the Peace Corps, but I’m so rusty!” “I have done Duolingo for years but don’t actually have the opportunity to speak Spanish to anyone!” These are all statements made by new members of the free weekly Northampton Neighbors Spanish Conversation group.  

Every Sunday at 7:00 pm, Spanish speakers and learners—and, we are all learners—gather for an hour on Zoom to speak Spanish. After a brief check-in to see how people are doing, we launch into a discussion on a topic. Some of our topics are serious, many are funny, and some of the serious ones turn out to be funny as we stumble our way through intermediate Spanish.

We all make mistakes, and we all learn from each other. And week by week, our Spanish gets better. In the next year, a number of us are planning trips to Spain or Latin America to flex our Spanish muscles.
