3-4PM on ZOOM
Jon will discuss the origins of Inner City Weightlifting, a program he developed in the Boston area that gives young people stigmatized by the judicial system hope, pride, a community to belong to, and a way out of gang violence. ICW challenges preconceived notions of criminality in communities that have been oppressed, blamed, and pathologized, and offers a creative and respectful alternative to mass incarceration.
Jon will discuss how and why he started ICW and how it evolved from a simple weight training program to a social justice organization that uses personal training to amplify voice and agency of people most often impacted by mass incarceration and systemic racism. What started as a gym, is now a community where people belong, are valued as equals, and listened to as the experts. Rather than doing something “for” someone, ICW partners with and alongside each person to promote personal success.
