Speaker Series: Joseph Silverman
Climate Change: What We Know and What We Can Do.
Joseph Silverman’s presentation will offer some hope and optimism about climate change, a topic that often elicits anxiety and despair. Joe will focus on solutions, including actions that individuals can take. He will describe government policies that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as research organizations that have identified solutions that could reverse global warming. With the help of a computer simulator, we’ll visualize the harmful effects of climate change and the positive impact of adopting workable solutions.
Joe is a retired counseling and school psychologist who worked in mental health clinics, schools, and private practice settings. He’s also an environmentalist who participated in the first Earth Day activities in April 1970. In recent years, he attended a number of conferences where he met and talked with climate scientists. In 2017, he completed an intensive training to become a Climate Reality Leader, a program created by former Vice President Al Gore.
Joe has a strong focus on the role of public opinion. He believes that action on climate change will only occur when the public demands it; to date, the messaging hasn’t generated that level of support. In his work at the local level, he has published climate-themed pieces in the
Daily Hampshire Gazette
and is a member of the
Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby
. The Pioneer Valley CCL is one of over 420 chapters around the country working to increase support in Congress for bipartisan solutions to the challenges we face.
